Not too many hw assignments but they're all a bit tough. Lab is where all the quizzes / checkpoints take place and that's where attendance is mandatory. 4-5 Handwritten tests that are 'checkpoints' make up most of the grade. no midterm 1 final.

Expect a few big homework, and learn the basics if you want to pass this course and the key information shared during lecture. He some prepared.

10 weeks of lecture (weekly readings + quiz + midterm) + 5 weeks of group presentations (weekly quiz based on them). Interesting topics but not really related to CS. There are a couple writing exercises but it's easy to score high as long as you write it in your own wording. Though attendance isn't mandatory, there are in-class quizzes/writings.

If you have the chance, take Keenan. Hurley is a good professor, but he doesnt correct your mistakes or help you improve. He will give you an A even if you have errors. This will really affect you in the long run, or in cs2013. Lots of homework, but again, not a tough grader. You will need to read the book and watch youtube videos

Hurley is great at teaching. He makes sure you understand before moving on. Exercises and HW are all easy if you pay attention in class, no surprises. Also gets you ready for the midterm and final. I would say he gives lots of work but honestly I learned the most from him and those assignments.

CS ethics is a joke at CSULA. Mark and John spend the first 8 weeks teaching non-CS ethics (Plato, etc) and quiz you on that. The other 8 weeks are spent doing group presentations (100+ people, 30+ groups). They have so much potential to teach us more about CS related ethics but instead, we waste our time and money "learning" from our classmates.

Some labs were very confusing and difficult, so start on them early and ask him many questions during class and office hours. He is very nice and extends due dates. Go to class because of pop quizzes. Sample midterm and final were very similar to the actual ones.

John is a good professor. He can be boring at times and talks all 2 hours of lecture and lab but as long as you pay attention you should be good. You will need a text book but there's a PDF. He gives 7-10 quizzes throughout the semester on the material and on abstract things. 1 midterm 1 final. 1 sample midterm & 1 sample final.

Lectures were average, large focus on homework. Lab often was simply getting a head start on homework. He basically expects and wants you to spend more time learning through coding problems rather than lectures or tests. However pop quizzes are common. Very flexible on homework due dates. I learned more about coding, biggest challenge was GUI

He is an alright guy honestly don't know if I would take him again. His lectures are kinda boring and he doesn't really guide you well, however he is very lenient. I understood most of his material but not right away. He is understanding with any situation you may have so just talk to him and he will help. PS - He loves Godzilla and beware of GUIs!

he really loves Godzilla and Dracula lol I had John for 202 and 203 and while some of the assignments were really hard, it made me a better programmer. he gives a practice midterm and a practice final that are really similar to the real ones. he is really big on unit testing specially in 203 and will make you do unit tests for the labs and final

I went into this class expecting to work and I was he tells you he wants this or that in your code and sometimes its extremely confusing but with his help or from friends you can figure out the code. He as a grader is chill however for my class its different. His student assistant was horrible at grading majority of the class felt the same

In CS you shouldn't depend on teachers that much, read the notes and the book, he's good, give practice exams that are similar to the exams... long lectures

I had John for CS120 and CS122. I would highly suggest as a introductory teacher in the CS major (he's also a great teacher in general). He puts a lot of time into his lectures and they are very clear. He also very helpful in his OH.
